Adrienne,

I found your post very interesting. Coincidentally, Magnolia is one of my
most favorite movies. Does anyone else find that they have very similar
tastes to other people who are big fans of Salinger? I often find that I
don't have as much in common (in terms of tastes) if a reader of Salinger is
more enamored with Catcher. I usually find that Franny and Zooey fanatics
are more my style. As wonderful as Catcher is, I feel that it is much less
idiosyncratic than F&Z and 9 Stories. Holden is more of a general character
with "problems" that most people relate to (although none the less brilliant
for it). I think it takes a different kind of person to attach themselves
to F&Z. Any opinions?

ps- about the whole foot fetish: Whenever I see feet in literature, I feel
that I am "trained" to think about empathy; i.e. how would it feel to walk
in someone else's shoes? It seems to go along with the idea of F&Z as a
"love story" and many Buddhist notions. Seymour empathizes with children
more than with adults. Adults are assumed as being automatically critical
of his feet. Plus that scene is funny as hell.

Hey guys,
I subscribed a while ago, but I've never really
written anything. But I came across something in an
interview with Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of
the movie Magnolia, where he talked about Salinger and
I thought you people might be interested:

What was it that attracted you to the world of game
shows?

I’d worked once as a P.A. on a game show called Quiz
Kid’s Challenge, an update of an old radio show. Part
of my job was to go through and edit together
videotape of all the kids they’d interviewed across
the country as potential contestants. Doing that
really linked up with the J.D. Salinger short stories,
with the Glass Family, and their involvement with a
show like Quiz Kids. This idea of, hey, let us go
through you and pick your brain and use it for
entertainment. All that, coupled with wanting to see
Philip Baker Hall do a new kind of role, and
especially to see him do something like a game-show
host.

Not all that amazing, but just shows the influence of
Salinger I guess.
Bye,
Adrienne
