hmmm... i think, salinger used feet as a symbol for a person's true self, his
experience, where he's gone. feet are sometimes "read", like palms. when he
(seymour or buddy... i think it was more buddy myself), was so paranoid about
the woman in the elevator looking at his feet, i think it was just an example
of his frustration at people's reactions to who he is. buddy seemed to
interpret a lot of seymour's problem being having a lack of understanding
from the rest of the world. in actuality, this was more buddy's problem, and
it was all he could relate to in seymour. when see more glass kissed Sybil's
foot in the ocean, maybe he was, in a way, blessing her life, or just
expressing appreciation to who she really is. well, in all obviousness, he
wanted to express that, but the only reason i can think of that salinger used
feet was for that. (i'm burned out from english homework, sorry if my
sentences are horrible).

and as for the stages of enlightenment in Nine Stories... most
of the characters were seemingly on a higher level of understanding, and
salinger seemed to intrinsicly know that zen and the paths to enlightenment
are different for everyone. in my opinion, the "youngest" character soul
seemed to be Lee, from "Pretty Mouth And Green My Eyes," so able to violate
with consolation. Esme seemed far along -- achieving zen is a lot about
finding yourself through helping others, and even though her life was so
hard, she was still so compassionate that she noticed the lonely American in
the corner, and she relieved some of his pain when he was in the war. And
Teddy, in all obviousness.
I would write more but I feel like I'm taking up a lot of space...and anyway
I have to go. Thankyou if you read my ramblings.
