I think the answer to this is really at the end of my last response to 
Daniel.  I summarized, there, his characterization of academics as:
Arrogant (and yes, it would surprise me to see a higher degree of 
arrogance among academics than it would among, say, electricians or 
mechanics -- if you could find a credible measure of arrogance)
Disconnectedness from reality.
Place strong emphasis on reason
Don't actually employ reason, but use reputation for intelligence to 
cover up poor reasoning.
If you don't see the difference between this kind of characterization, 
and my statement that
Most people aren't predisposed to abstract reasoning.
Then I don't think I can really explain it in any way that would allow 
you to see it.
