Merovingian thing, is it a reference to that whole French Priory of Sion
stuff? You know, a French Gnostic Messiah? Is Revolutions going to produce
Neo's body and say 'see he really wasn't like you thought', you know the
tired game of the closing shot of Neo still in his copper top pod or
whatever, or the 'architect' in a pod. Where the whole thing breaks down is
that those who control the matrix are not the ones who created people in
the first place but then again it could be another layer of that demiurge
crap. What say you? I am not a big fan of the big G and the whole Idealism
ploy. I saw in a video recently (Tuck Everlasting) where one of the
characters goes off on a tirade about control and everlasting life and the
priest he is talking to says 'you are speaking Blasphemy' and he replies
'yes, fluently'. Maybe the French silk curses apply here, it definitely has
found its way into 'continental philosophy'.

Oh, yeah -- what I think the W. Bros do is manipulate a generic sign
system representing enlightenment, and draw on several different
traditions for specific signs. An "enlightenment" leading to freedom
and consisting of "seeing through" surface reality and its structures
(which are designed to maintain control) to an underlying reality is
seen everywhere, good lord -- Buddhism, Christianity, Platonism,
Psychoanalytic theory, good old western enlightenment thinking, the
cathars, Critical Theory...the list could go on and on. It does look
like a hodge-podge, but it's a coherent sign system. How well do the W
Bros. understand it? I guess there's no telling until we see the final
version of the movie.

We're both suckers, you know :).

The Morovingian (sp?) was, I thought, the most interesting character in
the movie and the most full of it (and himself). Saying cussing in
French is like wiping your ass with silk...good lord...then writing a
program that concealed a powerful aphrodisiac in a piece of cake, all
designed to get himself a blow job from a beautiful blonde in the
women's restroom. What else does an Information Guy have to do with all
his information? I think he's a Faustian character on some levels.
His point was that Neo was doing all this stuff but didn't have a clue
why -- reinforcing both how Neo says he feels at the beginning of the
movie and the information we get at the end.

It turns out everything that Neo's been doing to liberate humanity from
the Matrix has been designed by the Matrix itself and is part of the
control mechanism, so the Morovingian's point is well taken, ultimately.
That's exactly what Neo didn't know he was doing. He's even been taking
his cues from the Oracle, who also turns out to be part of the system.

PS You're trying to remember the name "Persephone" -- that was the M's wife.
