i don't think very highly of mailer, either. funny how he managed to be
included in the list by appearing on the show himself...he also had some
horrid line about how you could rip out any 100 pages of heller's catch-22
and no one would even notice. bellow and updike never moved me either, at
least not in any writing longer than the essay. my personal preferences
are milan kundera/ivan klima, and toni morrison. and of course, the eye
by george bataye! (sp? just kidding)

i can't get over this one clever dialogue on the simpsons - it was the
mock-mary poppins episode and the simpsons are interviewing her ["sherry
bobbins, an original creation like rickey rouse and lonald luck"]:

Bart: pop quiz, hot shot - i'm supposed to be studying but you catch me in
        my room reading a Playdude. what *do* you do, what *do* you do?

Sherry Bobbins: I make you read every last article in that magazine,
        including norman mailer's latest claptrap about his waning libido.
