This item appears in the current issue of New York magazine (May
12, 1997, page 10, "Intelligencer" -- a section that has had a few
JDS articles over the years):
J.D. KEEPS ON TRUCKIN': J.D. Salinger fans, start
saving. Two of the reclusive author's rare letters
are due to be sold at Swann Galleries' Autograph
Auction on June 3. Both letters -- typewritten on
yellow bond paper -- were sent by Salinger in 1979
to a fan who'd asked his advice about Eastern
religions. The Catcher in the Rye author displays
a surprising familiarity with Grateful Dead lyrics
and Hindu texts in the letters, which warn his
young correspondent to think for herself. Estimate:
$4,000 to $6,000 each.
I shall try to get to the auction house to inspect the letters,
if they are going to allow pre-sale inspection. If I'm
fortunate, I'll report back what I find.
