Dear Chaz,
I recently wrote a thesis about Salinger for A.P. English and I feel
obligated to share some of his childhood with you.
--Salinger lived in a Jewish section of New York in the early part of
his life. There he attended the McBurney school (you may recognize this
name from Catcher, it's the school that the fencing team was supposed to
have a match with until Holden left the equipment on the bus) until he
flunked out in his sophomore year. At the McBurney school he was known
to be the best actor in his class. Despite Salinger's pleads his
father, Solomon, sent him to the Valley Forge Military Academy where he
spent the remainder of his academic career. At the academy former
cadets remembered him as having a quit wit about him and a sarcastic
attitude towards the daily routines and militaristic rituals. He was
known not to bea able to hold his liquor and get quite drunk on a few
occassions. It was said he did everything he could not to earn a cadet
promotion. He was also given to sneaking of campus to go to the local
bar or an early morning breakfast. For his graduation ceremony he wrote
a poem and presented it. This poem was set to music and is still sung
at the academy today.
-sorry this is so short and missing a lot of deatails but e-mail me for
further info.
