`...it is an important feature of the ideological system
to impose on people the feeling that they really are incompetent
to deal with these complex and important issues: they'd better
leave it to the captain...'
As Andrew rather insistently tells us, Noam must be right.
I freely acknowledge that the system's worked with me.
In fact it's worked a treat. Whenever the question of European
federation comes up, or global warming, or what to do about
battered wives, or should anything be done with Saddam or
whatever, my instinct for participatory democracy undergoes
instant blight.
I look into the honest, boyish faces of Bill Clinton & Tony Blair
& thank God that the captains are on the bridge. Where could
you possibly find a more intelligent, concerned, wise, splendid
pair of men ? Not, I hope, among the general specialists at
the end of the bar.
