If anyone is watching "The Nanny" tonight, know that cantor David
Benedict, the clergyman marrying two of the show's characters also
performed my marriage ceremony...Cantor Benedict was well known on both
sides of our families and we even taught at the same school when I was
getting married. I was pretty pissed when he asked for about half what we
got paid to teach one course for the ceremony, but it was worth it--after
some quick nonsense, he sang and then comically completed our ceremony
with "you sing like a bird" as though god had taken over his voice to
praise him...at the time I probably felt like seymour--too happy to be any
good to anyone--but that simple touch of humour (expressed in perfect
newyawkese!) made it possible for me smile and play the role of groom
without needing an understudy...will
