Yes, the original post was quite obviously 'blowing smoke', if you'll forgive the bad pun. It seemed so obvious, in fact, that it didn't occur to me that my meager tangent on the subject might somehow be understood as taking it literally. As a rule, the irony alarm should sound whenever the word "lollipop" is encounter in a post. If not, it's time to replace the batteries. The original post, ironic as it was, nevertheless did open up an excellent and irresistable opportunity to say a few favorable words about smoking, which, at least in discussions I've had or overheard on the matter, not including my own contributions, or those of Europeans, especially the Greeks -- the French also deserve mention here, as long as we're giving out credits, and let's not forget the fine contribution of our own Julia Haldemann from Switzerland, whose beautiful accent is certainly even more charming when heard than read -- have become exceedingly and, in my opinion, frighteningly rare. All this is just to say, my irony alarm is working just fine, thank you very much. -Sean -----Original Message----- From: Tim O'Connor [mailto:tim@roughdraft.org] Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 1999 10:51 PM To: bananafish@lists.nyu.edu Subject: RE: Salinger's bad influence At 3:55 PM -0700 on 5/5/99, you wrote: > Maybe cigarettes aren't all bad. I kind of thought the original post, about bad influence, had a touch of the satirical about it.... --tim o'connor
