A truly creative artist will master the standards, rules, and motifs of his
medium before he goes about challenging them. That's what sets him apart
from all the 4 year old finger-painters and keyboard-bangers. Roughly the
same idea as below, I think, although with the artist, the result is
creativity, whereas with Buddhism, it's 'enlightenment'.

P.S. Oh alright, I give up. What does "picking up fag- ends" mean?

i was under the impression you could participate in 'both'. The point
is , you have to eat the 'apples' (logic, knowledge) and then
transcend this logic, because it gets in the way of enlightenment
etc.
why assume that just because you eat the apples, you cant have
the pudding? after all, until the age of, what, 16, you're force fed
apples every day. why else dyou think it is that the glass kids are
so damn intelligent? or de daumier is so talented?
or am i just picking up fag- ends?...
