Not sure who you are referring to by Portnoy, but the
"distancing-himself-from-society-thing" ... hmmm.

I'd say Humbert and Holden both do so, but for different reason.  Humbert
is afflicted with a passion that's not acceptable in our society.  So he
distances himself to be able to satisfy his passion and remain free from
society's restraints.  Holden distances himself on the basis of some kind
of moral judgment he himself has placed upon society (they're phonies).
