Please tell her to believe in Santa Claus.  That would
solve two things.  First, she would be ostracized from the
friends that she wants to see at the mall and second it
would be a useful shield to all the hurt in the world. 
Cahnge the proverb to: hey if it won't kill you, at least
there's Santa Claus.  There aren't that many really great
days in the year anyway, Christmas takes the cake.
