Cecilia's dead on as usual...the way to be a writer is to write...a
lot...accept criticism, accept rejection without letting it stop you,
read a lot (yes...those Nick Adam stories by EH remain among my very
favorite stories too) and re-read the "Dear Old Tyger That Sleeps"
letter in SAI for confidence that one's reading and writing lives can
be connected with heart and honesty more than any writing program's
effects can connect one to the difficult work of writing. I haven't
read Jim the Boy but I'm guessing that Cecilia recommends it because
the prose has intelligence, truth and connects to her feelings about
life in ways that reify her sense of being...all the craft in the
world won't do that so much as knowing that your spirit and keyboard
are one and the same...dare to do it, will
