Cecilia, in her person, is certainly fashioned from a far
more delicate template than the Texas Desperada.
But I wonder did Valerie unwittingly stumble on some
hint of the other distinctions our gal shares with that
great tragic ikon of our youth. I have in mind, of course,
her awsome capacity for Southern Comfort & the unique
exuberance she brings to the songs enjoyed by the common
people.
One of my most moving musical memories is of our last
meeting in the White Lady Tea Rooms, Kinsale: that magical
moment Cecilia at last laid aside her bottle, slid under the strap
of her guitar & launched into that same heart-breaking ditty
Kris wrote for the great love of his life. In no time at all,
there we were, all of us – sailors, picknicking families, waitresses,
nuns, Huns – many with tears pouring down their cheeks,
singing along in a soft, supportive humming chorus.
And for me, of course, the climax of the afternoon was to hear
& experience the words matched by the action: ‘... to be holding
Bobbie’s body next to mine ...’
