Interesting that you should mention JAWS, Jim....

Only last week I was talking with Peter Benchley, who told me that he
totally regretted writing that book. The universal phobia for one of
the world's least understood creatures is a consequence that makes it
difficult for him to sleep at night--even in between the extravagantly
expensive silk sheets that he bought with the royalties.

(On the sub-theme of "shrink/assylum" films, I'd be interested in
Scottie's reaction to FRANCES--which almost literally blew me away when
first I saw it.... I actually did volunteer work at a Victorian
institution in Fifeshire which was not unlike some of the horrendous
scenes portrayed in that very realistic life of Frances Farmer.....)

OSR--I don't really think "Holden as gay" will go very far. There's no
trouble making a strong case for "Holden is scared shitless of
sex"--given his honest and immediate reaction to both the hooker and
Antolini.... I'd have acted EXACTLY the same way myself in both
circumstances, when I was Holden's age.... I was scared shitless of sex
too--which established an honest and immediate bond between us....

Cheers,

Paul
