I'm sure that you are right. A fascinating study would be to dig through
Rilke's poetry (and life, for Salinger was certainly familiar with both)
and list the many parallels. An idea for a thesis, I suppose.

Ah, well thanks. I'd forgotten about that. My interlocutor in that
discussion was not Bernd, however, it was our sadly missing Swede, Nick,
otherwise known as The Laughing Man.

I still love that poem. And Buddy Glass as Orpheus, singing his song for
Seymour to defeat death still makes a lot of sense to me.
