Aw, hell, Robbie, I thought I was being original and it turns out I'm just
remembering Strunk and White from my reading of it years ago.

I'm Crushed :). But thanks for the citation. It means the phenomena has been
going on since at least White's revision of Strunk's text...what...the 50s?

I had this conversation with my wife, asking her first if she's ever heard
anyone say, "I could care less" (yes), then asking her if that really made
sense (after explaining my reading and comparing it to the phrase "I couldn't
care less.")

You know how she responded, right? You KNOW --

"I could or could not care less"

:)
