Ok, forgive the word fabulous, then ;)

No, I knew you were speaking of the author himself and not the character
in his book all along -- I made a few leaps from author to character
there without signalling them (or justifying them). From what I
understand there are significant parallels between Fitzgerald's life and
the characters in _Tender_ -- the wife's long bouts with some kind of
psychiatric disorder (manic depressive?), the husband's alcoholism and
infidelities, him starting out dirt poor and moving in much wealthier
circles. Etc.

It's really impossible to know exactly how much of Fitz's life is in
_Tender_, but a good bit of it seems right there on the surface and not
reworked all that much. It's not too big a stretch for me to consider
that Fitz's alcoholism had motivations similar to the husband's in
_Tender_.

Just an idea, though -- it's the first thing that came to mind when I
read it.
