i liked tim's statement from a couple of weeks ago:

"I suspect that the Hurtgen Forest episode alone did
more to shape our boy than a hundred classes at
Columbia with Whit
Burnett or anyone else. How could it be otherwise?"

and this website now allows me to see its veracity.

also: i wonder if americans younger than 65 (?), who
are not historically inclined, can understood the
european perspective of america's role in the 2nd
world war. my grandfather's stories about the war
don't turn on the actual fighting (he flew a p-47),
but the european gratitude of people he met both
during and 40 years after the war.
