Hello, my name is Neil.
I've been receiving the mail digest for a few weeks now, and I thought it
was about time I put finger to keyboard (as it were) and post a mail
myself.
After reading some of the mails, I re-read the nine stories ( it must
have been about 9-10 years since the last time). By the way, the Nine
Stories are called "For Esme with Love and Squalor - and other stories"
here in the UK.
I had forgotten how much the Glass "children" appeared. Seymour
obviously, then Walt in "Uncle Wiggily", then I assume the narrator in
"Laughing Man" is Buddy - the ages fit with those ages and dates given in
"Hapworth" and then Boo Boo in "Down at the Dinghy".
It was when I finished reading "Down at the Dinghy" that I had to stop for a while. I
actually felt quite emotional - it wasn't that "the writing was so terrific",or that the
story was so great or whatever (though obviously both those things are true) it was more
that I just loved the people. I really loved Boo Boo and Lionel.
To carry on a point raised in earlier mails, I don't think it would be at all wrong to
say that Boo Boo and Lionel are "NICE" people.
Any way, I just thought I'd share that with you all.
Regards
Neil.
