Dear Bethany, how eloquently you pose the dilemma of reading Catcher as an
adolescent or as an adult.  I'm very interested in listening to adults
responding to Catcher and have found that they are much less likely to be
carried away with Holden as younger readers often are...but I am teaching
Catcher in my english class and have to admit that my own reading
continues to understand and love Holden...his confusion is life affirming,
plus I have to admit that I've always interpreted Catcher as a book with a
happy ending since I believe it's writing is the sign that Holden will
make his transition to adulthood as an author.  Will
