Hey! I just noticed something when I saw this quote: > "Everything everybody does is so -- I don't know -- not wrong, > or even mean, or even stupid necessarily. But just so tiny > and meaningless and -- sad-making." ("Franny" 26) `Sad-making'. I am currently studying Evelyn Waugh's `Vile Bodies' in which *all* the characters are always talking about things being `sick-making' `shy-making' (in a way to deny their true feelings) and so on. The whole novel is about people becoming robot-like and empty; playing on pretentions of knowledge and/or wealth - it's kind of a Gatsby on acid, without the profoundity. Does anyone else know the novel? Am I crazy to draw the inference ???
