Sometimes I wonder if Salinger is the greatest tactician in all of this.
Sometimes I wonder if he's *really* playing his cards right. Because by
withdrawing; by eschewing publicity he actually draws far more interest and
yes, publicity, than if he were some unregarded writer who had a few hits
in the 50s and 60s but isn't doing much recently. Or even a woman writer
who embraces publicity in all its forms (who it must be added I hadn't
heard of til the Salinger thing emerged) I wonder sometimes if it isn't all
on purpose, because let's face it, it's certainly cemented his reputation
for good.
