I think some distinctions are in order--and we do run into this with
several authors.  See, there's the part of the author that comes through
his or her work, and then there's that part mixed in with all the rest of
the author--that makes up the Real person.

I think in Salinger's case the Real Person wasn't very pleasant.  I think
the same is true of Joyce (though I think he could be a lot of fun if he
liked you :) ) and Robert Frost.  But at the same time what comes through
these people's works are fairly elevated.  There's no denying that.  They
have gifts of creativity and intellect, and a human soul.  But on a
personal level?  Forget it :)

I wouldn't want my daughters going out with Any of those guys.  Esp Joyce
