Yeah, I think children have a special role in Salinger's fiction across
the board.  Now, THAT would be an interesting study...

Yes, children or perhaps innocence have a special role in Salinger's
fiction. Somebody already said in an email that CITR was about fear of
changing. I would add that changing is sometimes growing up. I think that
the key to all this is in Catcher's last scene. I think that the two main
symbols are the rain and the carrousel. The rain is something linear, that
has a beginning and an end. The carrousel is something circular, where
Phoebe goes round and round. Holden wishes that time was like the
carrousel. He would like to stop time there, to prevent Phoebe and himself
from changing.
