See, what was really interesting to me, Erin, about your post was that
the author needs to give us more words to explain the words he gave us
the first time.  Then, eh, what do we use to understand those words?  

There comes a point where language has to have its own meaning apart from
any reference to the author.  At least to a degree.  Otherwise, meaning
does become impossible.

This isn't to say we can do anything we want with language.  Actually,
the opposite.
