Well ... not exactly. It would be more accurate to say that the author
attempts to make us think a certain way about characters and their actions.
All an author can do is make a suggestion (the same as any reader) towards
interpretation. It's not up to him or her at all whether the reader accepts
that suggestion. This is why my Seymour is different to Salinger's Seymour,
and both are different to my Seymour. It's simply the nature of language -
it is impossible for the author to broadcast 100% of his or her meaning to
the reader. And to me this is the most exciting part of looking at
literature - knowing that we all contribute to the larger text of a work.
