Let me offer another reading of Scottie's post, Will. I think he was being completely sincere. I think he really wasn't familiar with either the names or the concepts you were describing in your post (which I don't remember), so he was honestly and sensibly not replying. He was Telling you, I think, that he was not replying out of a sense of respect for you--but he was sincere. Now, what's interesting to me is that both Will's and my reading of Scottie's post is completely justified by the text itself. Something other than the text needs to be called into play to choose one reading over another. And then there's Scottie's actual intent, which probably fits either mine or Will's interpretation, but may be something else entirely :) Paul-- It sounded like you were putting the humpty-dumpty story in there to make a point--sorry if I took it too seriously ;) thanks for the humor. If I REALLY wanted to kill the joke, I'd go back to your post and point out words you used that indictated you expected your post to be taken as a serious reply--demonstrating the failure of authorial intent. I still may :) But I won't for now :) Jim On Wed, 25 Nov 1998 09:38:56 -0700 (MST) WILL HOCHMAN <hochman@uscolo.edu> writes: >Scottie, I think your first sentence below is insulting and the second >one >sloppy but I still enjoy your posts even if they do represent critical >positions that seem to be frozen in the past...hey, this is still a >world >that loves its dinosaurs long after they are dead! > >But what worries me is that you may have more than insulting me on >your >mind and little abiliity to learn new things...my question is simply >this--what is the most significant change you've experienced about >your >thinking about literature since being on this list? > >will > >On Tue, 24 Nov 1998, Scottie Bowman wrote: > >> >> I should like to have responded to Will but unfortunately have >not >> the faintest idea what he's talking about.
