Hello, Basquiata! This reply is for you, but all the other subscribers might find it interesting, too. This list currently lives on an NYU system, and its archives live on an NYU web server, but it's not an NYU-affiliated arrangement. Just that I am (lucky to be?) the system/network security manager here, and by jumping through a couple of hoops, I arranged this. (I'm in the improbable category of research faculty, too, and operated the mailing list service and occasionally teach classes, so those all helped a bit.) There are a couple of NYU subscribers, but I'll leave it to them to disclose their identities or continue to lurk. You should have received the welcome message when you subscribed. It explains what the list does. Essentially it is a forum for discussion of Salinger and his work and writing habits. I'd say that maybe 1% of the subscribers are from NYU, including me. Otherwise, this subscriber list (which is confidential, so you won't get junk mail unless the idiot sender first joins the list, and the names of subscribers is not public information, which has happened only twice, I think) covers a breathtakingly wide chunk of the planet. The web site still gets a hit rate of about 97% .edu addresses, but the subscribers are from many countries. (It strikes me as sad and ironic that I can't do an all-out Buddy Glass-ism and put these parenthetical remarks in as footnotes, since this mail is sent out only as text, not as HTML.) By the way, I mention that the list "currently lives" here because this list service is being retired gradually in favor of one that has more bells and whistles (that being the preferred method of delivering messages these days, it seems). But don't worry -- I'll handle the transition to a new home with as much grace as possible, causing the least disruption to the subscriber list. At some point in the short- to mid-term future, I'll send out an administrative message filling in the details. Cheers and welcome! --tim o'connor
