Jim, I'd have to agree with you there about Dan's
recommendations.  I feel the same way about NIN, since
quite apart from their sense of humour at Woodstock
'94 when they took to the stage as mudpeople, the
music played that night struck me as terribly dark and
negative.   The Fragile certainly does sound like
something to check out.
