Opie in the Rye

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, there's a short piece in the new
TV Guide (Nov. 6-12) recounting Salinger's comments on "The Andy Griffith
Show" (as cited in Joyce Maynard's book) and speculating on what might have
been if JDS had actually been a script writer for the show. Here's a sample:

Aunt Bee: Opie, did you and your friend Holden Caulfield enjoy Rafe
Hollister's banjo recital last night?

Opie: If you want to know the truth, no. What a phony. Banjos give me a
royal pain in the ass.

By the way, my name is Stephen. I'm a writer and a JDSaholic who still
enjoys the Smiths, can take or leave blonde jokes, and thinks we should all
stop in uninvited for breakfast at Tiffany's.
