As a relatively new member, I'd like to add my two pfennigs to this topic.
The off-topic tangents can get frustrating when they turn into a bunch of
one-liners that outnumber legitimate posts about Salinger, which is
ostensibly the reason we're here in the first place. Mind you, I have found
some of the literary-related off-topic posts to be particularly worthwhile,
since in the two or so weeks I've been here I've been turned on to author
Sherman Alexie and a great book for bibliophiles called "A Gentle Madness."
But since I've already tried pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie and even pumpkin ice
cream and found them all to be enjoyable in their own unique way, I lost
interest in the pumpkin talk some time ago. In fact, I kind of wish that
those involved could resolve their differences so that we can all band
together and confront the true enemy--the dreaded eggplant.

I was just wondering, why do certain people get pissed off when we don't
talk about salinger? Ok, granted, this is a Salinger newsgroup. Maybe I'm
missing something, as I've only read The Catcher thus far, but if we go off
on tangents for a month about pumpkin soup, what's the difference?
Pretending that all we care to talk about is Salinger is a little phony,
don't you think, Holden ;) ? Goddamn right.
