Though I love NYC, I don't anticipate being there anytime soon. However, fellow 'fishes, is anyone going to the MLA Convention in Chicago from December 26th - 30th? I seem to remember one or two people mentioning at some point having gone to the one in Toronto last year. If a 'fish or two were to grace my fair city, I might be forced to take them to my favorite hot spots, like the Baby Doll Polka Club, a place where the sequined grandmas come out to swing. They'll give kindly advice and tell you about their nice grandsons. Or perhaps the Red Lion, where the bathroom upstairs is haunted by the ghost of a gangster's moll, and if you walk across the street, you'll pass the alley where the lady in the red dress led them to John Dillinger. And if you're tired of that, you can always grab a cheeseburger at Billy Goat's Bar and Grill, located down the steps on lower Wacker Drive. You have to order a cheeseburger (they don't serve anything else) and make sure that you're nice to the Greek owner. His uncle put a curse on the Cubs in 1945 and they haven't won a World Series since. (Mayor Richie Daley should hire me for his board of tourism. I'll pack 'em in.) Just something to think about, fellow 'fishes...
