Plato's The Republic is good, BUT you have to read his
Dialogues!! Not only will you get a really good
background on Socrates' personality(most of what we
tend to know about Socrates comes from Plato), but it
brings up a really interesting facet of Socrates'
life: his trial, sentencing of capital punishment, and
suicide(as well as his justifications for his actions
and beliefs). In contrast to Plato and Socrates (and
most of the more metaphysical type philosophes), I've
foune Nietzsche to be a very good balance with his
harsh comments on the ancient philosophes and their
prejudices and sexism. I've found many philosophers
are inter-linked somehow and all the modern ones go
back to the ancient ones(if only to refute and reject
their beliefs):)
