I've been giving this some thought and:

For an old Salinger lover (one who nearly deified the man and his work
during my youth--I know, my mistake), Margaret Salinger's 'Dream Catcher'
and Joyce Maynard's 'At Home in the World' (which I read back-to-back) were
rough going, difficult to accept, but, alas, finally convincing,
eye-opening. Together, they constitute a diptych of damnation of the man.

Granted, one might seek safety in that lit crit theory of a firewall
separating man and work, but I'm not so sure how I'll feel the next time I
pick up a Salinger story.
