Hi,

By way of introduction, my name is Suzanne and I have a Catcher in the Rye
Web page, Exploring The Catcher in the Rye
--<http://www.geocities.com/exploring_citr>. Like some others, I like CITR
and the nine stories. I have been lurking for a few weeks here (and was
glad to see mention of the CITR book index a few days ago -- I'll add
"Smoke gets in your eyes" soon). Bernd Wahlbrinck is on this list and we
are acquaintances through email. Hi all!

Anyway..
I saw an amusing little reference to Catcher in the Rye in Jon Stewart's
comedy book, "Naked Pictures of Famous People." I didn't find mention of
this in the archives. The reference is pretty short, so I'll include it
here in full (hey, fair use, right? -- my review of Stewart's book is it is
a series of clever farcical stories -- parts of it are really excellent.)
The reference to CITR is in the story, "Revenge is a Dish Best Served
Cold." You don't really need to know the context of the story for this but
the story is about a delusional guy getting ready to exact a very elaborate
revenge he's been preparing for 30 years, on his former high school
tormentors:
"[Sheldon] smiled as he thumbed through a dog-eared copy of Catcher in the
Rye. The Steins' paperboy, Sid, had let Sheldon borrow it some years ago,
and in Sid's haste to go to college, become a doctor and have a family, he
had foolishly forgotten to retrieve it. Sucker, Sheldon thought to himself.
The book had provided a philosophical blueprint for this night's glorious
triumph to be. Sheldon made a mental note to send word of his victory to
the book's author, J.D. Salinger, just to let him know that at least one
person "got it." Besides he thought to this 'Salinger' would probably be
thrilled to hear from a fan. Sheldon made a quick list of excuses in case
Salinger pursued a meeting upon getting his letter."
:o)
