I was in university only six years after Salinger attended
Columbia. But I wonder what I'd have felt, as a twenty
year old Hemingway lover if I'd ever received from one
of my lecturers a book of poems & a Sunday school
head-pat for my 'unfailing attention'?
I can just imagine the whistles, jeers & ribaldry when
my friends found out. Still, I suppose an intervening
world war may have coarsened our sensibilities.
