Assuming that it's not a fake, perhaps he left it behind in his parents'
apartment and, at some point, it was discarded in a mother's "cleaning
out". Or perhaps the pre-Cornish (pre-privacy) Salinger, who moved about a
bit, ruthlessly thinned his bookcases. I certainly don't think the Cornish
Salinger sold it to this, or some prior, dealer.
