For all the years we've had these two crazy dogs (dachshunds, which I
think is German for "lunatic" ... or perhaps that word applies to
anyone who shares his life with a dachshund), I have found that in NYC
-- whose streets are reasonably unfriendly and where one rarely makes
eye contact -- you are automatically granted some kind of special
status when you are being led around by one or two goofy hounds. I've
had people who would never glance twice at me, if I were alone, stop
and strike up the friendliest of conversations centered on or around
the dogs. It's amazing how different people here act in the presence
of a friendly little dog.
