[Insert clapping of hands for Cecilia's re-introduction and the resulting
eagerness of all to follow her good, solid lead.]

I, particularly, felt eager to respond in order to provide a contrast to
Cecilia's depiction of where her heart lies. Cecila, you are so right that
there are places of belonging for everyone. You describe this beautifully.
This is for you:

I am a 28-year old dreamer. I live in the DC/N.VA area, and I work as a
Network Engineer and drive a Volvo. Not so long ago, I drove a Chevy
Cavalier. I speak of cars for that is the language of the young
professional in the land that I live. I, in opposition, find that you are
not what you have, but what you like [I think I stole some of that from High
Fidelity] and which memories you hold most dear.

I like:
-FILM [I rent/buy/& attend every movie that interests me in the slightest;
special affinity for Independent flicks]
-BOOKS [Currently reading The Lord of the Rings since my boyfriend & I
create each others' reading lists from time-to-time]
-TENNIS
-GOLF [hate it-love it-hate it relationship]

Most fond memories:
My most fond memories include any memory from birth-age 23. These are the
years I spent in the state of Wisconsin. I have these parents who have an
unusual knack for being kind and giving and real. I am not so sure they
have ever thought about doing something for themselves - ever. All my
relatives live in the same town of 23,000, so I saw them for each and every
birthday and holiday. My relatives are quirky & strange, simple & kind. As
a kid, I used to think how lucky my friends were who got to travel on
holidays to see their relatives. My furthest relative was 10 miles away.

On Sundays, my parents and my brother and I scheduled church, lunch, and
dinner around Packer games. It was the one time we got to eat in the living
room. We cheered, swore, and broke furniture together.

I grew up watching Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley. Both shows were set in
Wisconsin. Richie Cunningham wore a UW letter jacket. Laverne & Shirley
wore winter jackets and earmuffs and worked in a brewery. I thought the
whole world revolved around Wisconsin.

When it was time to choose a college, I applied to one -- UW-Madison. Being
what I considered the best school in the state and the school who's sports I
already had rooted for my entire life (not to mention based my wardrobe on),
it seemed fitting.

I get chills when I think about watching the Packers with my family, or
taking in a Brewer game over a brat and a few beers; or listening to the
BoDeans at Summerfest; or sharing a pitcher with friends while listening to
a band outside on the Memorial Union Terrace on Lake Mendota; or walking
down State Street in Madison and popping in used bookstores and coffee
shops. And, gosh, I actually miss the snow. My heart is definitely in
Wisconsin.

So, Cecilia. Do not feel guilty for abandoning Wisconsin and leaving her
feeling unwanted. The folks who you leave behind will warm her up with all
their hearts. And I will, too, some day.
