Although this was Dostoevsky quoted, in truth I think I am more like
Franz Kafka, who is my fourteenth cousin removed, through marriage and
dental work. Relatives tell me that as a little boy I resembled
cousin Franz, though I dispute this. (We have different ears.) John,
of course, is a different story. I'll leave it to him to be as honest
about his checkered past as I am about mine.

Although I have an Irish surname, my middle name is Eastern European,
and my father was Kafka's father's brother's nephew, by way of
illegitimacy, unsurpassed resentment, and existential dread. I think
that's the order in which it happened.

Oscar Wilde, on the other hand, never married into our family, though
he applied and was rejected by the co-op board due to irregularities
on his resume. One of my distant cousins never recovered from the
disappointment, and spent the rest of his life reciting from Wilde's
"De Profundis," to the annoyance of everyone around him.

I hope that clarifies things a bit....
