Hi Cecilia,

Thanks for calling me "terribly cute." I've just realized that I love the
way that phrase sounds when it is said out loud.

Algebra and calculus and all that stuff might as well be random scratches on
paper for me. I see my students working on such things when I walk into my
classroom and I look down at their papers and it's like in the movies when
the hero has been secretly drugged and everything starts turning hazy and
spinning and I have to look up before I walk into a wall or forget what I was
going to talk about for the next hour...

Now logic, and all that "if A then B" stuff and truth tables and Venn
diagrams... for some reason I can do that, that's easy (I had to teach it as
a grad student in philosophy). But I look at my students calculus books and
they look like the walls of Egyptian tombs.

Ah, well.

Tomorrow there is golf and two more autobiographies to sew into my quilt. (I
think only numbers 8 and 15 remain on the board as of now...)

All the best,

--John
