I bought the monkey at the auction sale of a circus that had gone
bankrupt.
The first time it occurred to me to try the experiment described in
these lines was one afternoon as I was reading in some article or other that
the natives of Java used to attribute the lack of speech in monkeys not to
the fact that they cannot talk, but simply that they will not. "They
refrain from speech" it said, "so that people will not put them to work."
Whoops, that's not mine. Better just stay quiet.
