'the bananafish'

in looking at yagoda's 'about town' again, i noticed
that i got it wrong re 'a perfect day for bananafish'.
in jan of '47 the story was called simply 'the
bananafish'. the one sentence synopsis makes no
mention of a wife. 'the story, at this stage, was
about a young man named seymour glass who has a
conversation with a little girl on a beach in florida,
then goes back to his hotel room and shoots himself in
the head with a revolver.' only after talking with
william maxwell did salinger add the opening scene
(and incorporate references to a wife in the later
scenes????), and this story was called 'a fine day for
bananafish'. it was then accepted for publication and
the title became 'a perfect day for bananafish'. the
title of the original story seems to reinforce
critical interpretations in which seymour is
identified as a bananafish.
