i imagine it's not new news that ian hamilton's papers
regarding his salinger bio ended up at princeton. a
description of said papers is here
http://infoshare1.princeton.edu:2003/libraries/firestone/rbsc/aids/hamilton-ian.html

i can't help but think that hamilton would have
delivered a pretty even handed bio had salinger
allowed him to. (hamilton's bio of robert lowell was
judicious; and hamilton had quite a sterling rep in
england. was a well repected poet and man of letters.
his death was extraordinarily lamented in the times
literary supplement.) when one compares his book with
alexander's hatchet job, well....
it would be nice one day to see a reputable full
length bio of jds appear. margaret's memoir, with its
first 100 pages on his early life and writings, is a
fine example of how new, concrete facts about jds's
life illuminate the stories. but i guess the literary
executors will stand in the way of that ... which
will leave us with only more magazine-style bios in
the future. of course, the bigger question is how will
they handle the unpublished stories.
