Re: Salinger's Problem with Westerners?

Hi All,

Sucker that I am, I read the nonsense posted at
www.dourish.com/goodies/decon.html. I get the joke (as old and lame as it
might be), but I still always cringe when people seem proud of their
inability to understand things. Ignorance is never a reason for
self-promotion, it seems to me.

Reading carefully, patiently, and with respect is obviously not one of this
guy's strong suits. His silly reductions here can be the cause for a
momentary smile, but little else.

And when Patrick writes that maybe Salinger thinks we should all "just read
the goddamn story and enjoy it," he is assuming that when I read critically I
am not enjoying what I read. He is horribly wrong.

This term I am deeply immersed in teaching a seminar on Dostoevsky. We are
reading. We are reading critically, and slowly, and patiently and we are
even "deconstructing" every so often. We are having a very good time.

All the best,

--John
