Re: Salinger's Problem with Westerners?

Ah Scottie,

The only reader I was consigning "to the ranks of the knuckle-trailers" was the caricaturist that wrote the web-silliness.

And as for any "reservoir of irritation" anyone might have with "academic critics," that is a problem I am happy to leave to the irritated. There are so many "academic critics" out there and they are all so different that I can only hope these readers find some, somewhere, who do not irritate them. Besides, when haven't "academic critics" irritated readers? I just finished teaching students the work of David Hume, including his writings on literary and aesthetic topics. And we know from his autobiographical essay how his work was received upon its initial appearance...

All the best,

--John
