maybe in salinger the wife--be it muriel or our
level-headed gal in 'esme' concerned about schraffts'
service, with the stock mother--is always the foil for
those sensitive men. the only good female is an esme
or phoebe. maybe margaret salinger was right: ole jd
don't like his women beyond the age of 19.
