I think there's nothing to shed light on; I think you nailed it right
in the center regarding her presentation of the book (why tell old
Lane the truth and have him probe her, as he surely would?) and her
family (all of us, in snapshots of our lives, at one time or another
fail to give a complete census of family/friends/colleagues/whomever).

So, I agree with your view, and have nothing to add because I think it
clear enough as is.
